Ingredients
- 1 box chocolate fudge cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box)
- 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
- 1 cup chopped Reese’s peanut butter cups
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Prepare the chocolate cake mix according to package directions and pour the batter into the prepared pan.
- In a separate bowl, beat together the cream cheese, melted butter, and powdered sugar until smooth. Gently fold in the peanut butter.
- Spoon the cream cheese mixture over the cake batter in random dollops — don’t spread it out completely. It will “sink” while baking and create that classic earthquake effect.
- Sprinkle the top with chopped Reese’s and mini chocolate chips.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the edges are set but the center is still slightly gooey.
- Cool slightly before serving. Best served warm for ultimate gooeyness!
Tips for Best Results
- Use room-temperature cream cheese for a smoother filling.
- Want more peanut butter flavor? Swirl a few extra spoonfuls into the batter before baking.
- This cake is delicious slightly underbaked — that’s the “earthquake” magic!
Storage & Make-Ahead
- Fridge: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Reheat in the microwave for 15–20 seconds before serving.
- Freezer: Freeze individual slices wrapped in foil for up to 2 months.
