Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, very cold and cubed
- 3/4 cup cold buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons melted butter, for brushing tops
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
- Add cold cubed butter and cut it into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Pour in cold buttermilk and stir gently just until the dough comes together. Do not overmix.
- Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat it into a 1-inch thick rectangle.
- Fold the dough over itself 2–3 times to create layers, then pat out again to 1-inch thickness.
- Cut biscuits with a round cutter and place on prepared baking sheet, sides just touching for taller biscuits.
- Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until tops are golden brown.
- Brush warm biscuits with melted butter and serve immediately.
