- Yield: 24–30 small pieces
Ingredients
Nut Filling
- 2 cups walnuts, finely chopped
- 1 cup pistachios or pecans, finely chopped
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
Phyllo & Butter Layers
- 1 package phyllo dough (16 oz), thawed
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
Christmas Honey Syrup
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2 whole cloves
- Zest of 1 orange
- 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Mix chopped nuts with cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Set aside.
- Unroll phyllo dough and cover with a slightly damp towel to prevent drying.
- Place 8 sheets of phyllo in the bottom of the pan, brushing each with melted butter.
- Sprinkle a layer of the nut mixture. Add 4 more sheets of phyllo, buttering each, then more nuts. Repeat until all nuts are used. Finish with 8 buttered phyllo sheets on top.
- Cut into diamond or square shapes using a sharp knife before baking.
- Bake for 45–50 minutes or until golden and crisp.
- While baklava bakes, make the syrup: In a saucepan, combine water, sugar, honey, spices, and zest. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes. Remove spices, stir in lemon juice, and let cool slightly.
- Immediately after removing baklava from oven, slowly pour syrup over the hot pastry. Let soak and cool completely before serving.
Troubleshooting & Texture Tips
- Soggy baklava? Make sure syrup is warm and baklava is hot when pouring—this prevents sogginess.
- Dry top layers? Brush every layer generously with butter and cover phyllo with a damp cloth during prep.
Storage & Make-Ahead
Store uncovered at room temperature for up to 1 week. For crispier texture, avoid refrigerating. Baklava can also be frozen for up to 2 months and thawed at room temperature.
Why This Recipe Works
This holiday version of baklava uses warming spices and citrusy syrup to give it that extra Christmas flair. The crispy layers, aromatic filling, and sticky syrup create a perfect balance of texture and flavor that keeps getting better as it sits!
Expert Tips
- Use a sharp knife to score deeply before baking so syrup can fully soak in.
- Let baklava sit overnight to absorb the syrup and enhance flavor.
- Top with festive sprinkles, chopped pistachios, or edible gold leaf for a holiday finish.
