This 4-ingredient mocha frappe is a cold, creamy coffee drink made with ice, milk, chilled coffee and chocolate syrup, all blended until thick and frosty. Drizzle a little chocolate or caramel syrup inside the glass, add a swirl of whipped cream, and you have a treat that feels special with almost no effort.

Why You’ll Like This Mocha Frappe

This is the kind of recipe you can make half awake, and it tastes like a coffee shop blended mocha for a fraction of the price. There is nothing to measure precisely, no special equipment beyond a blender, and the ingredients are things most kitchens already have.

  • Only 4 ingredients: ice, milk, coffee and chocolate syrup.
  • Ready in 5 minutes: blend, pour and enjoy.
  • Easy to customize: make it stronger, sweeter, lighter or dairy-free.
  • Coffee shop style at home: the syrup-drizzled glass and whipped cream make it look as good as it tastes.

Ingredient Notes

The coffee: Use brewed coffee that has cooled completely, ideally chilled in the refrigerator. Hot coffee melts the ice and leaves you with a thin, watery drink. A medium or dark roast gives the best flavor against the chocolate. Cold brew concentrate or two shots of cooled espresso also work well.

The milk: Whole milk makes the creamiest frappe, but 2 percent, skim, oat, almond or soy milk all work. Richer milk gives a thicker, smoother texture.

The chocolate syrup: Any chocolate syrup you like will do. It sweetens the drink and adds the mocha flavor in one step, so there is no need for extra sugar.

The ice: Regular ice cubes are fine. Smaller cubes or crushed ice blend faster and more evenly, which is helpful with a smaller blender.

How to Make Mocha Frappe

Step by Step

  1. Chill the coffee. Brew your coffee ahead of time and let it cool, then refrigerate it until cold. For the best texture, freeze some of it into coffee ice cubes the night before.
  2. Prepare the glass. If you want the coffee shop look, drizzle chocolate syrup, caramel syrup or both around the inside of a tall glass, turning the glass as you go so the syrup runs down the sides in stripes.
  3. Add everything to the blender. Pour the milk, chilled coffee and chocolate syrup into the blender cup, then add the ice on top.
  4. Blend. Blend on high for 30 to 60 seconds, until the ice is fully crushed and the frappe is smooth, thick and frothy. If chunks of ice remain, stop, give it a stir and blend again.
  5. Taste and adjust. Add a little more chocolate syrup for sweetness, a splash of coffee for strength or a few more ice cubes for thickness, then blend briefly again.
  6. Pour and top. Pour the frappe into the prepared glass. Top with whipped cream and a final drizzle of chocolate syrup, add a straw and serve right away.

Tips for Mocha Frappe

Use Coffee Ice Cubes

Freezing brewed coffee in an ice cube tray is the best trick for a rich frappe. Swap some or all of the regular ice for coffee cubes and the drink stays strong instead of getting watered down as it blends and melts.

Brew It Strong

The ice and milk dilute the coffee, so brew it a little stronger than you normally would. Use an extra spoonful of grounds, or use espresso or cold brew concentrate.

Adjust the Sweetness

Two tablespoons of chocolate syrup gives a balanced, lightly sweet drink. Use 1 tablespoon if you prefer it more coffee-forward, or 3 tablespoons for a dessert-style mocha.

Control the Thickness

For a thicker, spoonable frappe, add more ice a few cubes at a time. For a thinner, sippable drink, add a splash more milk. Blending in small bursts keeps the ice from melting too much.

Liquids First, Ice Last

Adding the liquids to the blender first helps the blades spin freely and crush the ice evenly, especially in a small personal blender.

Variations

  • Caramel mocha: add 1 tablespoon caramel syrup to the blender along with the chocolate.
  • White chocolate mocha: swap the chocolate syrup for white chocolate sauce.
  • Mint mocha: add a drop of peppermint extract and top with crushed mint candies.
  • Extra creamy: add a small scoop of vanilla or chocolate ice cream for a milkshake-style frappe.
  • Dairy-free: use oat or almond milk and top with coconut whipped cream.

Storage

Best fresh: A mocha frappe is best enjoyed right after blending. As it sits, the ice melts and the drink separates and turns thin, so it does not keep well in the refrigerator.

Make-ahead coffee cubes: Brew a pot of coffee, let it cool and pour it into ice cube trays. Once frozen, transfer the cubes to a freezer bag and store them for up to 1 month. They are ready to drop into the blender whenever you want a frappe.

Chilled coffee: Keep a jar of brewed coffee in the refrigerator for up to 4 days so it is always cold and ready to use.

Leftovers: If you have some frappe left over, pour it into ice pop molds or an ice cube tray and freeze it. Blend the frozen cubes with a splash of milk later for a fresh frappe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use instant coffee?

Yes. Dissolve 1 to 2 teaspoons of instant coffee in a few tablespoons of hot water, then top it up with cold water to make 1/2 cup and chill it before blending.

Why is my frappe watery?

Usually the coffee was still warm or the drink was blended too long. Use fully chilled coffee or coffee ice cubes, and blend just until smooth.

Can I make it without a blender?

A blender gives the classic slushy texture, but you can shake the milk, coffee and syrup in a jar and pour it over crushed ice for an iced mocha instead.

How much caffeine is in a mocha frappe?

It depends on your coffee, but 1/2 cup of regular brewed coffee has roughly 45 to 50 mg of caffeine. Use espresso for more or decaf for none.
