Preparation Time

  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Cook Time: 1 hour
  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Servings: 6

Ingredients

To make these delicious scalloped potatoes, you’ll need:

  • 4 cups of finely sliced potatoes (preferably Yukon Gold or Russet)
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups of milk
  • ½ teaspoon of salt
  • ¼ teaspoon of cayenne pepper (optional for a mild kick)
  • 1 cup of grated strong cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup of finely shredded cheese (for garnishing)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Potatoes

  • Wash and peel the potatoes. Using a sharp knife or mandoline slicer, thinly slice the potatoes into even rounds. Set them aside in a bowl of cold water to prevent browning.

2. Make the Sauce

  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, stir in the flour and whisk continuously to form a smooth paste (roux).
  • Gradually pour in the milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Cook the mixture for about 3–4 minutes until it thickens.
  • Add the salt and cayenne pepper for seasoning, and mix well.

3. Assemble the Dish

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Grease a baking dish with a bit of butter or cooking spray.
  • Arrange a layer of potato slices in the dish, slightly overlapping them.
  • Pour a portion of the prepared sauce over the potatoes, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle a handful of grated cheddar cheese on top.
  • Repeat the layering process until all the potatoes and sauce are used, finishing with a generous layer of grated cheese.

4. Bake

  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes.
  • After 40 minutes, remove the foil, sprinkle the shredded cheese for garnish, and bake uncovered for another 15–20 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbly, and the potatoes are fork-tender.

5. Cool and Serve

  • Allow the scalloped potatoes to rest for 5 minutes before serving. This helps the layers set and makes serving easier.

Tips for Success

  • Cheese Selection: Strong cheddar cheese works wonderfully for flavor, but you can experiment with Gruyère, Parmesan, or a mix of cheeses.
  • Thin Slices: Ensure the potatoes are thin and evenly sliced for consistent cooking.
  • Optional Add-Ins: Add thinly sliced onions, minced garlic, or cooked bacon between the layers for extra flavor.

Cheesy scalloped potatoes are more than just a side dish; they’re a crowd-pleaser that can elevate any meal. With their creamy texture, rich cheese flavor, and perfectly tender potatoes, this recipe is bound to become a family favorite. Serve it alongside roasted meats, grilled chicken, or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
