Cake:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup water
- 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Frosting:
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/3 cup milk
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup chopped pecans (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 13×18-inch sheet pan.
- In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt.
- In a saucepan, combine butter, oil, water, and cocoa. Bring to a boil, then pour into dry ingredients and stir well.
- In a small bowl, whisk eggs, buttermilk, baking soda, and vanilla. Stir into the batter until smooth.
- Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 20–25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Meanwhile, prepare the frosting. In a saucepan, melt butter with cocoa and milk. Bring just to a boil, then remove from heat.
- Whisk in powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth. Stir in pecans if using.
- Pour warm frosting over the warm cake and spread evenly. Let cool before cutting into squares.
