- Total Time:
- Yield: 4 mini onions
Ingredients
- 4 small yellow onions
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- Olive oil spray
- Dipping sauce (ranch or spicy mayo), optional
Instructions
- Peel onions and cut off just the top (not the root). Carefully slice down into the onion in a cross pattern, but do not cut all the way through. Make 8-12 cuts total to form “petals.”
- Gently separate the onion layers to bloom them slightly. Soak in cold water for 10 minutes to help them open more.
- In a bowl, whisk eggs and milk. In another bowl, mix flour with all seasonings.
- Dip each onion into the egg mixture, then coat with seasoned flour. Shake off excess and repeat for extra crispiness.
- Spray onions generously with olive oil spray and place in a preheated air fryer at 375°F (190°C).
- Cook for 8–10 minutes or until golden and crisp. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
Tips for Perfect Blooming Onions
- Soak time matters: Cold water helps bloom the onions — don’t skip this step!
- Double dredge: For thicker coating, dip again in flour after egg wash.
- Spray well: Oil spray is key for crispness in the air fryer.
Storage & Reheating
- Refrigerator: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
- Reheat: Air fry at 350°F for 3–5 minutes until hot and crisp again.
- Do not microwave: This makes them soggy.
