  • Preparation Time: 30 minutes
  • Rising Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Cooking Time: 20 minutes
  • Total Time: 2 hours 20 minutes
  • Servings: 8 buns

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast (1 packet)
  • 3/4 cup warm milk (around 110°F/45°C)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

For the Filling:

  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

For the Topping:

  • 1/2 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Mix the Dough: Add the flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Let it Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Step 2: Prepare the Filling

  1. Cook the Beef: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon.
  2. Add Aromatics: Stir in the onion and garlic, cooking until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Season the Filling: Add salt, black pepper, paprika, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well and cook for another 2–3 minutes. Remove from heat and let the filling cool slightly.

Step 3: Assemble the Buns

  1. Divide the Dough: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball.
  2. Fill the Dough: Flatten each ball into a disc and place about 2 tablespoons of the beef filling in the center. Gather the edges of the dough and pinch them together to seal, forming a smooth bun.
  3. Place on a Baking Tray: Arrange the buns, seam side down, on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

Step 4: Bake the Buns

  1. Preheat the Oven: While the buns are rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Add Egg Wash and Cheese: Brush each bun with the beaten egg and sprinkle the tops with shredded cheddar cheese.
  3. Bake: Bake the buns for 18–20 minutes or until golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  4. Cool and Serve: Allow the buns to cool slightly before serving. They can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature.
