- 1 cup diced tomatoes
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup sour cream
- ½ cup salsa or taco sauce

Place the chopped lettuce in an even layer across the bottom of a large clear serving or trifle bowl. - Add the beans:
Spread the drained and rinsed black beans evenly over the lettuce. - Add the taco beef:
Spoon the seasoned ground beef over the black beans, spreading it evenly from edge to edge. - Add the creamy layer:
Carefully spread the sour cream over the beef to create an even layer. - Add cheese and tomatoes:
Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the sour cream, then finish with the diced tomatoes. - Finish and serve:
Spoon the salsa or taco sauce over the top or serve it on the side. Chill briefly before serving, or enjoy immediately.
Optional Toppings
You can customize the salad with diced avocado, sliced black olives, chopped green onions, crushed tortilla chips, jalapeños, cilantro or extra shredded cheese.
Tips for the Best Taco Salad
- Let the cooked beef cool slightly before layering so the lettuce stays crisp.
- Drain the black beans thoroughly to prevent excess liquid in the salad.
- Use a clear glass bowl to showcase the colorful layers.
- Add crunchy tortilla chips just before serving so they do not become soggy.
- For extra flavor, mix a little taco seasoning into the sour cream.
Make Ahead
You can prepare the seasoned beef and chop the vegetables ahead of time. For the freshest texture, assemble the salad shortly before serving. If preparing it several hours ahead, keep salsa and crunchy toppings separate until serving.
Storage
Cover leftover taco salad tightly and refrigerate. It is best enjoyed within 1–2 days because the lettuce will gradually soften once combined with the sour cream and salsa.
